I headed over to Capsule Trade Show yesterday to check out the Spring/Summer 2011 Mens collections. With a myriad of emerging brands coming from every part of the globe, I expected to see something fresh, something new. However, I wound up browsing a great amount of collections that took a ride on the safe side. For the most part, there was a lack of experimentation or even attention to minute design details across the board. But all was definitely not a loss, as there were a handful of designers with perspective, precision and that needed element of wearability. Here’s my picks for the Best of the Mens S/S 2011 collections at Capsule Trade Show:
Skingraft S/S ’11
Designer Jonny Cota constructs his line of progressive leather pieces out of Los Angeles. For this Spring, dark colors were not spared with pieces ranging from hooded mesh tanks, zip-up leather vests with elaborate shoulders, denim-leather hybrids and pleated gloves.www.skingraftdesigns.com
Ernest Alexander S/S ’11
The New York-based label of self-proclaimed “manly bags” are the perfect choice for men’s carry-alls. The clean lines and understated design can take wear and tear while still maintaining a masculine appeal. Ernest Alexander has also released an iPad case this season for all of your tablet needs. www.ernestalexander.com
Johnny Love S/S ’11
Designer John Vinnem hails from Norway bringing forth a plethora immaculately tailored jackets and coats. When getting an in-depth look at his jackets, you can see the layers and layers of detail that goes into constructing a Johnny Love jacket. Yet, Johnny values the other pieces necessary to complete your wardrobe. The soft cotton tees and simple plaid oxford shirts round out the collection pleasurably. www.johnnylove.no
Retrosuperfuture S/S ’11
Rain or shine, winter or spring, man or woman – we all need a sweet pair of sunglasses to compliment our outfits. Retrosuperfuture based in Milan, has a fantastic range of fun frames for men, women and even some unisex models that offer an you an instant cool aesthetic. www.retrosuperfuture.com
Shades of Grey by Micah Cohen S/S ’11
I instantly to a liking to the Shades of Grey line designed by Micah Cohen. Based in California, the span of the collection was wide and appealing to the menswear consumer. I fell in love with the jean vest with the small tie details at either side, which are pictured below. Micah had fun with linear ethnic prints and even showed a small collection of carry-all bags. www.shadesofgreyclothing.com
