It seems like everywhere you turn, people are adopting new forms of dress. It could because they saw it on their favorite celebrity or on a style blog or on a stranger’s instagram. While I think it’s nothing short of prolific that we’re able to influence one another from a million miles away, I think it’d be fair to say that some originality has been lost when it comes to dressing for ourselves. Sometimes, we don’t even think that the things we wear can ever communicate who we are.
It’s time to leave behind the carbon copying of styles and do the due diligence to create your own look. That requires a few things: being in touch with the clothes that make you excited, a longing to share how you feel and a willingness to stand proud in exactly who you are and not compromising that for anything. It’s easy to buy the things your favorite girl crush wore but it takes vision to create your own look for yourself. It’s your statement to the outside world! And because I have ton of shit to say, I’m always using clothing as a medium to express whatever I am feeling. But how do you figure out what your ‘look’ is? Don’t be overwhelmed and try to categorize yourself, take your time – let your eye for the things you like develop.
Inject Your Mood into Your Look
If you’re thinking, how do I do that? It can be simple. I for one love all things feminine and romantic. I tend to mix all eras of vintage clothing into my wardrobe. When I’m in a lifted mood, I like to wear light, neutral colors in fabrics that move in wonderful ways – when I’m waiting to cross the street and the wind blows my skirt in such a way, I feel like I’m a part of a black and white film. What a wonderful feeling. Clothing can be therapeutic too, you know.
Create a Moodboard
There is nothing wrong with having things and people’s style that you like. It’s so awesome to be inspired and reinterpret their influence through your own look. And sometimes, it’s nice to get a good idea in your mind of what you would like to wear. Tear out pages from magazines, print out some stills from your favorite movie scenes, copy pages from great books or gather some old photos of your family members with great style. Tack them onto a corkboard or even your wall and you can begin to visualize and narrow down how you want to present yourself to the world with sartorial confidence all in one moodboard. Pinterest is also great tool to use for a moodboard, you can create boards around your new look.
Wear Your Confidence EVERYWHERE
Confidence is the biggest key to style. If you are going to go out on a limb and express yourself through your clothing, you may not always be understood. Whether it’s strangers in the street or your mom frowning at your oversized glasses, don’t let this deter you from being you and wearing what feels good to you. It’s nourishing for the soul to be exactly who you are. And when you put together your newest look and are ready to unleash it into the world, hold your confidence with you every strut you take – because you know you look and feel damn good.
