After watching a disturbing yet intriguing episode of True Life: I’m a Alcoholic, I got to thinking. There are so many young people that drink heavily every weekend as a social activity. While this ‘social drinking’ may seem harmless at first, many young people develop alcoholism from their weekend rendezvous. Not are they only harming themselves, but they are also harming others. Both girls that were being followed on True Life had more than one DUIs on their records. The girls put themselves in extremely unsafe situations on a daily basis. By the end of the episode, one of the girls was able to kick her habit of drinking due to effective AA meetings. On the other hand, the other young girl still was not able to even admit she had a problem, even though she would drink beers while brushing her teeth, every morning. Luckily, there are now excellent alternatives to avoid danger if one does decide to have a drink or two on their Saturday nights. Right Rides is a nonprofit organization that offers women, queer, and trans-genders safe rides home after a night out to avoid sexual assault and harassment. Right Rides is sponsored by ZipCar, now serves 35 neighborhoods in NYC on Saturday nights at 11:59 to 3:00 am Sunday mornings. Also, with their program Safe Walk they will accompany you if you feel unsafe walking home alone. Please be safe when you gallivant around this amazing city, ladies!
