Menswear Madness: The Double-Breasted Suit is Back

Spring/Summer 2009 Collections from: D&G, Prada, Ann Demeulemeester, Emporio Armani, Smalto, Missoni, Tommy Hilfiger, D&G
Ahhh, menswear. It has been quite some time since Lala NYC has shifted the spotlight onto menswear. So boys, it is time for some much needed attention. The men’s spring/summer collections for 2009 were exciting to say the least. There were some notable trends and influences but I couldn’t seem to peel my eyes away from one recurring trend on the runway: the double-breasted suit jacket.
I remember the days were it was no-brainer for men to slip on a double-breasted suit in the morning and be on their way. Although, it has been rather some time that menswear transitioned the suit into a slimmer-fitting, single-breasted jacket with extra sharp tailoring and skinny ties. Yet this season’s collections made the conversion from super svelte to a more roomier jacket, with more breathing space in a double-breast. While designers like Ann Demeulemeester and Gianfranco Ferre went for a more comfortable fit for Spring, Gucci & Ferragamo still opted for the single-breasted jacket, as did Moschino and John Richmond.
