Lala Talks: Women’s Sexuality in Mainstream Media

I heard word from a good friend on Saturday about some scandalous photos published of Aubrey O’Day in the latest issue of Complex Magazine. I quickly skimmed through the issue and was left with a bit of disturbia. We all have heard the phrase “sex sells” before, but when is enough, enough?
For quite some time now, the entertainment industry has used over-sexualized and under-dressed women as the forefront of pop music. Raunchy lyrics, skimpy wardrobing, trashy performances has sold millions of records and has reached millions of young girls across the world. In the past, we had artists like Britney and Christina to make an example of. Today, record execs have done us one better and have given us bikini-clad girl groups like Danity Kane and The Pussycat Dolls.
I am all for a women’s desire to feel sexy inside and out, but there is a very thin line between sexy and trashy. There are millions of young girls that look up to groups like the Pussycat Dolls and have mastered the art of working a stripper pole before the age of 10. It is just too much. Female artists can easily use the scapegoat of their genre of music being adult but you would highly foolish to believe that these young, impressionable girls are not paying attention to what they see on television and what they hear on the radio.
The aforementioned artists have a responsibility as public figures and most importantly as WOMEN to respect themselves so young girls know to do the same. After all, being a strong woman of class is always in!
