A Summertime getaway to Puerto Rico always does the trick when I’m itching to get out of the city around this time of year. Just a quick 3 and a half hours and boom, I’m in my home away from home and I don’t even need a passport to get there. Ever since my family has had their place in Puerto Rico, I average 2-3 trips to the motherland a year. But I haven’t gone during hurricane season for a long while, which usually lasts from about June to November.

At the beginning of August, we came at the height of hurricane season and wound up right in the middle of Tropical storm Bertha. She reared her ferocious head and caused heavy rainfall and winds for two out of the five days we were there – but the sun didn’t want to stop shining for us and we made more than due. With mojitos in hand and the best bacalaitos you can get on the island, there were no complaints. After eating lots of fried food, I was dying to clean up my diet a bit and found the best fresh juice place in Isla Verde called Bajuice.

We rented a cheap car to see the best sights in Pinones, Loiza, Rio Grande and Fajardo. It’s the best way to see Puerto Rico and explore some unbeaten paths. See, a little rain in exchange for an island adventure never hurt nobody.
