Repurposed Trends: The Neo-Gladiator Sandal

The weather is dragging here in New York and all I keep thinking about is Spring. I guess the delay isn’t so bad, as it gives me ample time to figure out what I’m looking to wear in the warm weather months. My feet are tired of being in socks, boots and too high heels- and they need the perfect home to rest. Scouring the web in search the perfect flat sandal, I haven’t found exactly what I’m looking for, but have definitely come across some great contenders. Yet, along the way, I’ve noticed an interesting revival to the gladiator sandal – what I would have believed to be a dead trend after seasons and seasons of retail attention.

This modern footwear rejuvenation is what I like to call “the neo-gladiator sandal”. A futuristic escape from cheesy metallic leathers and an introduction to smooth finishing and heavy hardware. This reconstructed sandal is most reminiscent to footwear that Caligula would have preferred to wear in battle- sans those overenthusiastic studs and shimmer of gladiator sandals past. The neo-gladiator sandal is sturdy, tough and ready for any battle that the day may bring. Thick straps offer a luxuriant protection against an elusive period of consciousness. Although, it seems as if this school of footwear is the reshaped, reconditioned answer for buyers and consumers that are comfortable with the form of foregoing footwear from season’s past.

My top neo-gladiator picks come from Reed Krakoff, Alexander Wang, Roger Vivier and Chloe. What are some trends that you’ve seen that have resurrected for the better?
