Sounds of May 2014: The Newness

As May is coming to a close, I had to release my monthly Soundcloud playlist of all the new/independent artists, songs and sounds I’ve been listening to this month. Up to this point, all my playlists have been pretty upbeat with lots of dance-centric tunes, but as the weather is warming up – I wanted to slow things down, take it back to basics and make it feel like an eclectic soulful dream state.

I hope you enjoy the select tracks from Australian artist Banks, Vic Mensa’s new venture into singing, some Brazilian sounds, a crazy smooth mix from Marcel Vogel for THUMP with tons of rare and classic soul samples. I really loved the projects that Jesse Boykins and Princess Nokia released this month, so I had to include a few of those in there. Then, I fell back in love with this old Twin Sister song titled “Lady Daydream” a few weeks back that brought theme of this month’s playlist full circle.

This month’s Sounds of May 2014 Playlist is titled “The Newness” for all of the beautiful new things that have entered my life this month – a new apartment, a new sense of self, new love, new losses – essentially, a new life. It’s a beautiful feeling and for it all I’m feeling infinitely grateful. And when you think about it, what is better than the feeling of something new in your life? When you a take that moment to take a deep breath, as if to take it all in – you suddenly get this indescribable feeling in the pit of your stomach because you haven’t got a clue what’s about to happen next – but damn, does it feel beautiful.

Wishing you all the beautiful newness that the universe can offer you this summer. Tell me what new music you’re listening to lately, as always – I’m all ears.
